Lionesses
too good for GRFA
Friday
24 July 2009
(Robert Spasevski) - In windy conditions at B.T. Connor
Reserve Preston Lions WFC hosted a GRFA side, to
deservedly secure the three points.
With Ashley Kelly and Thommay Nicolaou coming back into
the starting line up, Preston Lionesses fielded a full
strength squad.
The Lionesses went ahead 1-0 in the 30th minute with a
goal from Kirstie Shearing. Soon after, chances fell to
Sarah Sumner and Thommay Nicolaou which almost increased
Preston's lead in the first half.
Preston came out in the second half knowing that one goal
wasn't enough and started the second half playing positive
and creative football.
They were soon to be rewarded when Diana Piculovska
combined with Tina Vrettakos to lay the ball off to
Kirstie Shearing outside the box who clinically finished a
long range shot in the 56th minute, making it 2-0 for the
home team.
With a solid defence, the Lionesses midfield and forward
structure continued to pepper the GRFA goal with Beejay
Alpozgen and Jacquie Ghirxi on separate occasions breaking
the GRFA offside trap and rounding the keeper, but failing
to capitalise.
The win puts some significant daylight between Preston and
the bottom two sides GRFA and Bendigo.
The Reserves ended in a close encounter with a 1-0 win to
Preston, scored by Elena Psaila in the 33 minute.
