Lionesses
remain undefeated after strong win against GRFA
Tuesday 28 April 2009
(Pece Siljanovski and Andy Fry) - Preston Lions WFC
traveled to Geelong in Round 3 of the Womens Premier
League last Sunday as the Lionesses braved the elements to
notch up three well earned points against GRFA.
The newly promoted regional team were hotter out of the
blocks and went ahead against the run of play in the 25th
minute through Brittany Elsen.
Preston
fought back hard with some brilliance on the left side
from Ashleigh Kelly aided Jacqui Ghirxi and then Elly Curo
to hit the net and go into the break 2-1.
With
plenty of depth Preston made some changes early in the
second half and sealed the win in the 55th minute when
Casey Naumovski broke the home sides offside trap, rounded
the keeper and tucked a left footer into an empty net to
make it 3-1 for the Lionesses.
A gallant
effort from the Geelong girls and a fine top corner
fingertip save denying Sarah Sumner late in the game.
Outstanding efforts from Kelly, Beejay Alpozgen, Kate
Christoff and Katia Tavolaro.
Preston
sit fourth on the WPL ladder after round 3, well in
contention to challenge the top and look forward to the
upcoming fixtures.
The
Reserves again ended in a close encounter with only one
goal separating the sides. Elena Psaila, Antonia Boljesic
and Jess Cvetkovska were the standouts for the Lionesses.
The
players and coaching staff would like to thank our
assistants and all the support we receive on match days
and off the park, it cant be done without your invaluable
help.
Next week
Preston face the in-form friendly foes South Melbourne on
Sunday May 3 2009 at 11am and 1pm at BT Connor Reserve.
Our sponsors will be attending with food and drinks to
follow the main game.
