Lionesses begin their 2009 WPL campaign with two draws
from first two rounds
Wednesday 22 April 2009
Preston Lions sit fifth in the Women’s Premier League
after the second round of the 2009 season with two hard
fought points, both from one all draws keeping the
Lionesses in the top half of the table.
Round 1 against Bendigo Vipers at Darebin was a scrappy
affair although Preston were the more structured of the
two teams and managed a second half goal via a well struck
Elly Curo free-kick.
Although
the well organised back line hardly put a foot wrong the
Vipers managed to level with ten minutes on the clock.
Brilliant performances from Ang Talevska filling in at
right back and midfielder Kirstie Shearing.
Round 2 at
BT Connor Reserve against Casey Comets panned out much the
same with two sides giving everything in an amazing
display of women’s football at the highest level. A
perfect through ball from Ashleigh Kelly in the 75th
minute saw young forward Jacqui Ghirxi in space and able
to slot the oncoming keeper.
With
Preston’s well drilled defence holding firm the Comets
managed a last gasp corner which after a goalmouth
scramble was bumped home to equalize. Beejay Alpozgen,
Tina Vrettakos and Captain Diana Piculovski impressive on
the day.
Preston
remain undefeated so far against two sides that are
notably stronger than last season, however will be looking
to take maximum points from all of their upcoming fixtures
to regain the foothold and finals experience they enjoyed
in season 2008.
