WPL:
Lionesses march on
Friday
20 June
2008
(Victor Sekulov) -
The Preston
Lions Womens team continued their fine form as they march
on towards securing a final five position and finals
football with a convincing 4-0 win over South Melbourne.
Preston took control of the game very early on and a
number of chances came Preston's way but the girls could
not fashion a good goalscoring opportunity.
Eventually nice play from Raudh Houston enabled her to
escape her marker and she played it to Peta Lipec. Her
shot was half saved by the goalkeeper but the ball bounced
towards the goal with Peta and a defender racing towards
it. The ball hit the post and bounced back into play. Peta
was first to the ball and she hit the back of the net. It
was 1-0 to Preston.
After a melee involving most of the players the referee
restored order, resulting in both teams going in at half
time with ten players each.
The second half was all Preston as Sarah Lovett scored a
lovely goal by flicking the ball over the defender and
scoring from a tight angle as the goal keeper came out. It
was 2-0 to Preston and soon after it was 3-0 after Diana
Piculovski played Sarah Lovett through and she beat the
dfence and goalkeeper to score her second of the game.
Now Preston was in complete control as Raudh Houston,
Sarah Sumner and Sarah Lovett all had good chances to
score. Sarah Lovett ended up with a hatrick as she scored
yet again and Preston were now 4-0 up. The Preston defence
was faily quiet as the midfield through Julia Baldwin was
controlling the play and stopping the South attacks. Sarah
Lovett went on to score two more goals but they were ruled
offside.
It was a very convincing result for the Lionesses and
ensures that Preston's fine form is being reflected on the
field. Next week they will be away to Bendigo, an
interesting challenge for the Preston girls.
