Lionesses
equal on top of table after round three of WPL
Wednesday 08
April
2008
The Preston Lions Womens Football Club remains equal top
after round three of the Victorian Women’s Premier League
(WPL).
A slender one
goal lead in the first half against Bendigo Vipers was
enough to hold all three points and to emulate the start
of the 2007 season which made other clubs stand up and
take notice.
Senior Coach
Andy Fry’s comments after Sundays clash were clear "the
players and staff are keeping a lid on things and our full
concentration is on staying tight as a group and giving
full commitment to go the distance this season". "The
players have been brilliant and I've never worked with
such a vibrant, dedicated group of girls, they show great
character and are just enjoying playing football at the
moment of which I'm very proud".
Preston
didn’t have it all their own way in a scrappy affair
against the Vipers with the rock solid backline working
overtime and in-form goalkeeper Nabby Saliba pulling off
several world class saves and her second “Shut-Out” in two
weeks.
Bendigo star
centre-half Maika Ruyter- Hooley again causing all sorts
of headaches for the Lions all over the park. The Preston
team were instructed to "not under estimate" and to
"respect" the talented Vipers side which troubled Preston
last year. Casey Naumovski continued her stellar season on
the left and forwards Peta Lipec and Sarah Lovett were
again stopped only by brilliant Bendigo defending.
Roni Guilbert,
Petra Van Egmond, Kate Christoff and captain Diana
Piculovski also made huge contributions in front of a
lively crowd. New signing Julia Baldwin looked dangerous
coming off the bench in the second half.
Our Reserve
team continued on their winning way with a hard fought 2-1
victory. Preston went 2-0 at half time and looked like
increasing the gap when the regional side managed to
salvage one back and fight to the end. Standouts on the
day were Hannah Matthew–Prosser in goal, Mare Ognenovski,
Nikki Garner and young gun Antonia Boljesic.
The players
would like to thank Foxtel Cup (VPL) coaches Goran
Lozanovski, Sam
Frangos
and
their staff for their time and inspiration at training
sessions last week whilst Lioness coach Andy Fry was away.
