Lionesses
roar at Bob Jane Stadium
Sunday 30
March
2008
The in-form Preston Lions Womens Football Club continued
their success on Sunday defeating old rivals South
Melbourne at Bob Jane Stadium in round two of the
Victorian Women’s Premier League (WPL).
After
starting well with midfielder Ashleigh Kelly rattling the
woodwork in the first minute the game was end to end for
the next seventy minutes. An under manned (due to State
call–ups) Preston matched a tidy well coached South
Melbourne team in a crowd pleaser that kept everyone
guessing until the final whistle.
The Lions
backline of Sarah Lovett! Yes Sarah Lovett, French signing
Roni Guilbert and best on park again Casey Naumovski
proving too solid for the young brilliance of South’s new
signings Tina Vrettakos and Aimee Benton. The generous
crowd also got to witness an inspiring display from ex-NTC
goalkeeper Nabby Saliba on the odd occasion the home team
broke through.
Peta Lipec
was on target again late second half to seal full points
for Preston as they stick with two other sides at the top
of the WPL. Outstanding displays from Casey Naumovski,
Nabby Saliba, Roni Guilbert, Sarah Lovett and midfielders
Paula Massouh and Ashleigh Kelly. Petra Van Egmond signed
from from First Division Bayswater Strikers is looking to
be the find of the season for Andy Fry and staff at
Preston. The club is proud of the debuting young guns
Thomay Nicolaou and Lauren Turco who were brought in by
the club into the WPL, congratulations girls.
In the
Reserves game, an awesome football display from the girls
to take South Melbourne apart 7–1, brilliantly coached by
Steve Briffa whilst Victor Sekulov cruises Amsterdam!
Starring were Shez Harris, Dani Petrovski, Mare Ognenovski,
Steph Briffa and Dom Dorning.
We move on to
round three of the WPL at home next Sunday at BT Connor
Reserve against the Bendigo Vipers. The players thank you
all for your support.
