Preston
Lionesses full of fight in round one of WPL
Wednesday 26 March
2008
Preston Lionesses pulled off an amazing fight back win over
Keilor Park Tuesday night at Darebin in round one of the
Women’s Premier League (WPL).
A “new look”
Preston outfit outplayed, out tackled and outgunned a
clever, well structured Keilor side. Keilor were the
better team out of the blocks and a brilliant early goal
saw Preston 1-0 nil down. On synthetic Preston were not
able to play their normal physical style game but never
gave up and seemed more likely to score with several
attacks at Keilors goal.
Second half
brought dividends for all the hard work and slight
tactical changes when Peta Lipec, in front of a huge
Preston support was able to bring the house down with an
equalizer. Shortly after she was brilliantly put through
again by midfielders Piculovski and Massouh and popped one
over Keilor keeper Katie Neville to give the Lions the
lead.
Keilor were
in tatters as Preston Lions WFC coach Andy Fry made two changes introducing Lauren Turco and Thomay Nicolaou into the WPL and moving new
signing Sarah Sumner to the middle of the park. Within
minutes Sumner had slid a perfect through ball to the
talented Sarah Lovett which eluded Neville, clipped the
post and dropped over the line.
The game
played out in tremendous spirit and was a marvelous
display of top flight women’s football. Best on the night
Casey Naumovski, Peta Lipec, new signings Veronique
Guilbert, Petra Van Egmond and Kate Christoff.
Our
Reserves put in a great performance under the guidance of
Steve Briffa with many personnel including Victor Sekulov
missing. Unlucky to come away with no points but plenty of
talent to work with.
The staff and
players thank the many supporters and look forward to
playing against South Melbourne in round two of the WPL at Bob Jane Stadium this Sunday
30th March 2008 with kickoff at 11.00am for Reserves and
1.00pm for Seniors.
