Lionesses
back in top five
Sunday 24
June 2007
(Victor Sekulov) - Preston Lion Womens team went back into
the top five with a tough 3-1 win against University of
Melbourne on Sunday. It was the Lionesses first win in
eight games and their third away win of the season.
Preston
started off the more determined of the two teams and put
the pressure on the goal through first Diana Piculovski
and then Nicole Nicolau who went though the defence and
had her shot saved for a corner. Diana got onto the
resulting cross but the University goalkeeper saved.
Diana was
provider this time as she passed to Peta Lipec, whose shot
was again scrambled away by the goalkeeper for a corner.
Sarah Lovett played it again to Peta and the cross went
just over the bar. Seconds later Ashleigh Kelly took
possession of the ball and curled one just past the post.
It was all Preston at this stage of the game. Another
cross went begging for a touch but no Preston player could
get to it.
The game
settled down to a scrappy battle in the midfield with
Sarah Lovett’s great chance, once again saved by the
Melbourne goalkeeper the only real opportunity for a goal
in this passage of play.
Despite this
it was Melbourne who could have scored first with a free
kick hitting the crossbar. The game ended at half time 0-0
with both sides blocking each other out.
The second
half started with Melbourne putting on the early pressure.
A free kick went wide of the Preston goal but Melbourne
scored direct from a corner, helped by confusion between
Casey Naumovski and Nabby Saliba. It was 0-1. But Preston
came back soon after.
Ashleigh
Kelly brilliantly went up the field and passed it to Sarah
Lovett, who took on a player and from an acute angle
placed an excellent shot in the far post. It was 1-1.
Preston were back in the game but not for a desperate save
by Nabby Saliba on the goal line it could have been 1-2 to
Melbourne.
The game was
becoming very scrappy in parts and it was Peta Lipec who
had the best chances with shots being either saved by the
goalkeeper or going over the bar. A shot charged down by
Melbourne fell to Peta who placed a shot into the goals.
Preston were now in front 2-1.
Just like
last week Preston took the game to Melbourne in the last
few minutes. It was soon 3-1 to Preston after Sheree
Harris lobbed the ball over the University goalkeeper to
round off a tough game and give Preston a well deserved
win and push them back into the top five.
The Reserves
played an excellent game but could not win the game,
finishing 0-0 despite having many chances which went
begging.
