Fry coach of Lionesses in 2009
Saturday 18 October 2008
(Pece Siljanovski) - Preston Lions Football Club is pleased to announce the re-appointment of FFV Coach of the Year Andy Fry as the womens senior coach for season 2009 for the Womens Victorian Premier League (WPL).

Fry with his coaching staff have guided the club to bigger and better things over the past two years. After the Lionesses gained promotion to the WPL in 2007, Fry was given the job of consolidating and establishing the Lionesses roots in the WPL. The Lionesses were happy to have finished 2007 in a respectable eighth spot, three positions away from a finals birth.

In off field matters the club was in its best shape it has ever been, with committee stability and strong corporate backing, the Lionesses aims were to play finals football and proudly represent not only the whole northern region of Melbourne in the highest womens competition in the state, but also carry the same club name that the senior men have made famous nationally.

The club sent shock waves throughout the entire competition when at the end of the season the Lionesses finished third on the ladder, the highest position the club has achieved in the WPL. The Lionesses continued their form into the finals series, disposing of the much more experienced WPL club Ashburton. Although the Lionesses lost the next match with a credible performance against Box Hill Inter, the women of Preston had another chance to play for the last remaining spot in the finals.

The following week the Lionesses meet another experienced WPL side, Heidelberg United. Although for the majority of the match the Lionesses outplayed their more fancied opponents, it was United who progressed to the finals in penalties after a winner could not be determined in ordinary and extra time.

Even though the season was over, the women of Preston could hold their head up high knowing that not only did they finish third on the ladder, but they performed brilliantly in the finals series, wining against Ashburton and making sure that United earned their spot in the finals after pushing them to penalties.

The Football Federation Victoria acknowledged the excellent work by Fry as he was awarded the Coach of the Year Award of the WPL competition.

With Fry as head coach, the Lionesses are now continuing the building blocks of being the leading womens club in the northern region with junior girls squads being established for 2009, providing a pathway for talented girls to play reserves and senior football in the WPL. We would like to wish Fry and his dedicated staff the best of luck in 2009.
