  VICTORIAN PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH REPORT

Thunder secures Minor Premiership after dominant win against Preston
Sunday 02 August 2009
(Pece Siljanovski) - Dandenong Thunder have secured the Victorian Premier League (VPL) Minor Premiership with two weeks remaining in the season after four goals by Joseph Di Iorio secured the points against the Preston Lions Football Club in round 20 of the VPL at B.T. Connor Reserve.

Thunder have certainly exceeded everybody's expectations as the club was promoted into the Premier League this season, a feat that only few clubs have ever achieved.

Dandenong scored their first goal in controversy as the linesman deemed a shoot from Di Iorio that hit the cross bar and bounced near the line as a goal. Frustration was evident from the Lions after the decision was made as Michael Miskas received a red card after his second yellow card for the match.

Preston although with ten men continued to create chances and were rewarded in the 32nd minute as Thunder's keeper Stuart Webster dropped the ball in the box and Vladimir Kostadinovski pounced on the opportunity and leveled the score.

With one minute into injury time Dandenong hit the lead again, Di Iorio's positioned himself perfectly to score from a header as he received the cross from the right side.

The visitors extended their lead as Preston's ever reliable keeper Damir Salcin misjudged a free kick from Marcus Stergiopoulos two minutes into the second half.

Di Iorio would go on to score in the 73rd and 84 minute which secured all the points for Dandenong, as the visiting supporters went into party mode celebrating their clubs achievements with the players and Thunder staff.

Next week on Sunday Preston Lions will meet its rival neighbour Heidelberg United at Olympic Village from 3pm, while Dandenong will face Melbourne Knights at George Andrews Reserve on Saturday from 7pm.
