Hume City overwhelm Preston Lions in goal frenzy
Sunday 19 July 2009
(Tugrul Ozdemir) - A great team performance by Hume City FC provided them with an eight-nil thrashing over Preston Lions at B.T Conner Reserve.

After two decent performances against Richmond and Oakleigh, Preston has gone back to its woeful ways as they got taught another football lesson by championship contenders Hume City.

With a double to Serkan Oksuz, and single goals to Tony Sterjovski, Ross Thompson, Andy Vlahos, Alfonso Opazo, Zoran Petrevski and Burak Kocak, Hume City has increased their goal difference to 21 goals.

But to Damir Salcin’s credit, the score line could’ve been a lot more as he managed to pull of some decent saves.

From the start of the whistle Hume City always looked threatening as the inexperienced Preston line-up looked intimidated by their opponents.

The flood gates opened on the ninth minute of play. Zoran Petrevski got bought down and won a free kick 25 meters out, straight in front of goal. Tony Sterjovski got behind the ball and easily placed the ball into the bottom left hand corner to give his team an early lead.

Hume continued to dominate play as they almost doubled their lead with attempts on goal by Zoran Petrevski and Ross Thompson, but great saves by Damir Salcin kept the score line at one-nil for the time being.

Halfway through the first half Ross Thompson doubled their lead. Brendan Beni played the ball to Ross, who twisted and turned then took a cracking long range shot and left Damir Salcin stunned.

Captain/Coach, and arguably Hume City’s most prolific player, Andy Vlahos, got his name on the score sheet with 42 minutes played. Tansel Baser provided a well timed pass to Vlahos, who got in front of his defender, on a tight angle he chipped Damir Salcin, and gave his team another reason to celebrate.

With the first half about to end, youngster Caner Ucarli and Tansel Baser almost got a fourth, but due to some desperate defending the score line was left at three-nil.

It was the same story in the second half as Hume City had total dominance of the game. Alfonso Opazo had an early attempt, agonizingly go wide, but 15 minutes into the second half, he got Hume’s fourth.

Zoran Petrevski got on the end of a miss kick from a Preston defender, held the ball up and with his back to the goals gave an amazing through ball, and with a well-timed run Opazo got to the ball first, beat the keeper, and dug Preston’s whole deeper and deeper.

Ross Thompson almost got his double with a long range free kick as his shot on goal smashed the post, but nothing could’ve saved Preston as Zoran Petrevski got onto the score sheet with 71 minutes gone.

Next to the halfway line, Ross gave a pin-point long ball into the penalty spot, and with a mixture of dismal defending and a bit of luck, Zoran toe-poked the ball into the back of the net to score his ninth for the season.

Hume were continuing their pressure on goal as Zoran was denied by the cross bar, and Ross forced Damir into a great save with another long range shot.

But the goals kept on coming as Serkan Oksuz scored his team’s sixth goal of the game. Serkan caught the defence napping as he bet the offside trap, got one-on-one with the keeper, and easily strolled around Damir to slot the ball into the back of the net.

With minutes remaining before the final whistle, youngster Burak Kocak got involved in the action. Michael Bosevski provided the cross, Zoran Petrevski flicked the ball with his head to the back post were the ball was met by Burak who hit the ball first time and scored his first goal in the Victorian Premier League.

Deep into extra time Serkan Oksuz got his double. Serkan got onto a loose ball, dribbled past his defender, played a one-two with Burak, got one-on-one with the keeper, had his first attempt on goal saved, but the ball rebounded into his leg and it rolled in for a goal.

The humiliating defeat ended there, as Hume demolished Preston and sent out a warning to all other Victorian Premier League teams.

Next week Hume City host Green Gully who sit outside the top five due to goal difference, and Preston will try to gain some respect back against quality side, Dandenong Thunder. (Please note error in the sentence, Lions will face Sunshine Georgies not Dandenong).
