  VICTORIAN PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH REPORT

Cannons edge out Lions by a single goal
Sunday 12 July 2009
(Pece Siljanovski) - A single goal by Oakleigh Cannons forward Jerry Karpeh was the difference in a tight contest against Preston Lions Football Club in Round 17 of the Victorian Premier League at BT Connor Reserve on Sunday.

The day was very emotional for the Lions, as it was the first match after the passing of the clubs Vice President Gorgi Puljkov. A minute silence was marked before the match begun, as the players and supporters paid their respects towards the hardworking and dedicated Puljkov.

The Lions fresh from their first victory two weeks ago against Richmond started stronger of the two sides, however were unable to punish the Cannons.

Their best chance came from the impressive Preston forward Martin Hana, who was on the end of a great through ball from the Lions midfield. Hana masterfully passed the Cannons defender and was one on one with the Oakleigh keeper Cagalj. Unfortunately Hana's shoot went just wide of the target.

The Cannons made the Lions pay for their early misses as a scramble for the ball in Preston's box, the Lions were unable to fully clear the ball from the area as Oakleigh fired a number of shoots, until Karpeh's effort was on target to give the visitors the lead.

Oakleigh then stamped their authority on the match, however this did not reflect on the scoreboard as the vastly improved Lions outfit managed to withstand the pressure and Preston keeper Damir Salcin denied the Cannons on a number of occasions.

The three points were vital for Oakleigh as their finals aspirations were kept alive, with only a point separating them from the top five.

Next week Preston Lions will meet Hume City in Round 18 of the Victorian Premier League at BT Connor Reserve on Sunday 19th July 2009 3.00pm, while on Friday night Oakleigh will travel to face Richmond SC.
