Steven Pace signs with Melbourne Victory
PLFC MEDIA RELEASE
Wednesday 31 October 2007
Preston Lions championship winning player, Steven Pace, has become the second Lions player this year to secure an A-League contract, signing for the Melbourne Victory today.

Pace impressed coach Ernie Merrick during trials over the past two weeks, and has formally joined the reigning A-League champions on a short-term deal to replace injured Victory defender Daniel Piorkowski.

Twenty-four year old Pace, a previous Best and Fairest winner with the Lions and third Best and Fairest this year, held down a central defensive position for much of the 2007 Foxtel Cup season after injuries and suspensions to several key players forced him to shift from his traditional midfield role.

The move paid dividends with Pace acquitting himself superbly in defence, proving to be an instrumental factor in the Lions’ memorable run to the 2007 Victorian Premier League Championship.

“It’s certainly been a whirlwind couple of weeks for me,” said an excited Pace.

“It was only a month ago that I was playing in a winning Grand Final with Preston which was a remarkable achievement given the hard work done by everyone at the club this year, and to now be playing alongside the likes of Kevin Muscat, Archie Thompson and Daniel Allsopp against the best players in Australia is a challenge that I’m really looking forward to.”

“I went to the Victory game at Telstra Dome last Friday night and got butterflies, so to go out there as a Victory player is a very exciting prospect.”

“Hopefully I will get my opportunity in the team over the coming weeks and repay the faith shown in me by Victory and everyone else who has been involved in my football career up until now.”

The Preston Lions are fast gaining a reputation as Victoria’s breeding ground for potential A-League and overseas talent having already farewelled goal keeper Lou Acevski to the Czech Republic First Division and defender Izzy Erdogan to A-League team Adelaide United during the year.

Fellow Lions defender Les Anastasiou was also invited to trial with Adelaide United earlier this season, whilst midfielder Tony Sterjovski and two-goal Grand Final hero Zoran Petrevski have both trialled with fellow A-League clubs Sydney FC and Queensland Roar respectively over the past few weeks.
