Small
Sided Football (SSF)
Small-Sided Football (SSF) are modified
forms of football designed to meet the needs of players
aged 5 - 11. The philosophy of SSF focuses on enjoyment
and skill development through freedom of expression and
limited emphasis on coaching.
The smaller sized fields with fewer
numbers of players per team encourages more touches on the
ball and opportunities for more goals to be scored.
Information on how Preston Lions FC SSF program will run
Preston Lions FC SSF program is designed to introduce
young boys and girls aged 5-11 years to the game of
football. It focuses on teaching kids the basics of the
game in a non-competitive, friendly environment.
SSF is ideal for all levels of ability, as kids are placed
into groups determined by age and skill so that maximum
skill development can take place.

Small-Sided Football Guidelines
Small-Sided Football (SSF) provides an enjoyable
participation experience for young people of all abilities
with a major focus on skill development through freedom of
expression, minimal coaching, and limited emphasis on the
scoreboard.
With the full implementation of SSF now complete by
Football Federation Victoria (FFV), SSF now caters for the
Under 7, 9 & 11 age groups.
The main changes, noted in the guidelines, are a change in
the age groups with the Under 7’s operating in a 4-a-side
intra club/club hub format, the Under 9’s playing a 7 vs 7
fixtured league with no points or tables, whilst the Under
11’s will play a 9 vs 9 fixtured league with points and
ladders. Please note that results from the Under 11’s
competition will have no bearing on the Under 12’s for the
following year.
