JUNIORS:
Preston Lions U15's win 2008 Fawkner Cup
Saturday 4
October
2008
(Bill Korunovski) -
The Preston
Lions U15's Super League squad that finished a very
respectable fourth place in the home and away season were
hungry for more challenges. That challenge came in the way
of the Condello Fawkner tournament.
Many of the
teams injury concerns throughout the season were now just
a thing of the past and everyone was ready to play. The
coach Lade Kitanoski now had a full squad to choose from
for his starting eleven which made his life a little
easier.
The Fawkner
Cup was held over four weekends and some games were also
played under lights and during the AFL Grand Final
weekend. From the word go Preston dominated every game
they played in, not giving their opponents a sniff. The
Preston Lions U15’s went into the tournament as hot
favourites and it showed the other teams why this was the
case on the field of play.
The
semi-final was played against Altona East who were
undefeated in the 2008 home and away season. The boys of
Preston gave them a 3-0 drubbing, giving them a taste of
what to expect in next year’s super league season.

The Final was
played the following day against Bulleen who we had
already beaten in the qualifying pool. The game was hard
for both sides with both defenses holding up to be nil all
at half time.
The second
half Preston dominated the play and had at least ten
scoring chances but the Bulleen keeper to his credit saved
the day for them, it was inevitable that Preston would
score and it came in the way of John Stojcevski breaking
through the midfield and sending a bullet past the keeper.
The score
line finished 1–0 but did not truly reflect the dominance
of the Lions. A well deserved win as everyone at the club
is looking forward to season 2009.
Coach
Kitanoski and assistants Bill Korunovski and Dragi
Petrovski would like to congratulate all the boys for
their efforts throughout the season and their commitment
to the team and the club. Also a special thanks to the
parents and sponsors who helped out throughout the year,
their efforts were much appreciated. |
