Dear Preston Makedonia Supporter,

On behalf of the Preston Lions Football Club, I would like to wish you a warm and exciting welcome to season 2010.

After a tumultuous season last year which regrettably saw the club drop back to State League Division 1, the past 5 months has seen the squad undertake a gruelling training schedule and practice games in preparation for the season ahead with our eyes firmly focused on one single goal - promotion back into the Victorian Premier League.

When I was approached to return to the club this year – the club that I love and played for as a junior, the club that I have had the honour of captaining, winning a VPL Championship and Best and Fairest Award - the decision was an easy one.

I have always considered Preston to be my home as playing for the club in front of my fellow people has always brought out the best in my football ability. Preston is without doubt the biggest and most successful club in Victoria and I am absolutely committed to making sure we reclaim our rightful position in the highest level of competition in this state. So I consider this coming season in State League Division 1 to be another special challenge of what I and my team mates can achieve at Preston.

We are also looking forward to renewing some old rivalries and derbies with former VPL teams such as St Albans, Fawkner, Whittlesea and Bulleen.

The club has also taken the courageous and I believe right decision to focus heavily on its youth development. With the majority of the squad in their early 20’s and a sprinkling of senior experienced players, under the leadership and guidance of coach Zeljko Gagula who was a major influence during our 2007 championship season, I believe the club is headed in the right direction as we look to the future.

Membership also remains one of the most critical areas where the club can and has to improve if it is to survive and prosper beyond 2010. Significantly, the last five years has seen a steady decline in membership with only just over 350 members in season 2009 (including junior registrations). So I implore all of our existing and past members, supporters, and in particular the wider Macedonian community, to dig deep for your club and take an active part in the 2010 membership campaign so we can achieve the target of 500 members. This is the only true way that you can proudly ADD YOUR VOICE TO THE LIONS ROAR!

Finally I’d just like to say that the Preston Makedonia shirt has meant a lot of different things to many people throughout the past 50 years, and I ask you all to search within yourselves and find what it truly means for you. I certainly know how much it means to me and I, along with every single one of my team mates, will be doing everything in our power to ensure that the shirt is worn with pride and distinction in 2010.

Your 2010 Captain,
Tony Sterjovski
