FROM THE COACH
TARGET = 1000 Members
Welcome to season 2008 of the Victorian
Premier League. Season 2007 was indeed a year that will
live long in the memory of every Preston Lions fan. After
claiming the Minor Premiership, we were able to show
everybody why Preston is the best club in Victoria by
winning the Grand Final in emphatic style and we will be
looking to emulate that feat again in 2008.
However, our impressive on-field
performances have sadly not translated to relative success
off the field as most would have expected. The club’s
current financial plight has been well publicised and
whilst a number of fundraising initiatives were
implemented during 2007 to help the club through this
difficult period, there is still a long way to go if we
are to make a serious dent in the club’s existing debts.
Membership has been identified as one
of the most crucial areas where the club can improve.
Significantly, the club’s membership base has actually
decreased over recent years, which is a surprising trend
given the club’s on field success. I also have fond
memories of supporting our great club back in the National
Soccer League days and would look forward to watching home
games regularly with 5,000 other passionate Preston
supporters. In recent seasons, however, we have been lucky
to average 1,000 spectators per game. If we can get at
least half of those people back supporting Preston, it
will go a long way towards bringing the club back to its
former glory.
I urge all of our supporters, and in particular the
Macedonian community, to take an active part in the club’s
2008 membership campaign so we can achieve the target of
1,000 members for the first time in the club’s history.
That’s what will help get the club back on track
financially, as well as showing the rest of the
competition that Preston is the benchmark by which all
others are measured.
We will be rewarding all those members
that sign up before the 6th February with a special
discounted membership price, as well as rewarding those
members who can attract new or dormant members to the
club. Everybody knows someone who was once a member, or
would love to become a member of our great club. So all
you need to do is get them on board for season 2008 and
both you and the club can benefit.
I encourage you all to financially
commit to the Preston Lions in season 2008 and continue to
play an important part in what will undoubtedly be the
most challenging year in the club’s distinguished 50-year
history. Together, we can all make it another year to
remember at B.T. Connor Reserve!
