Funds for humanitarian appeal in Macedonia raised while Magic win over second string Lions squad
Monday 16 January 2006
Even though a second string Preston Lions squad lost to Altona Magic, a charity organisation was the real winner with funds raised from the sale of entry tickets donated to Australian Humanitarian Aid for Macedonia (AHAM) / Macedonian Horizons.

A total of $4,770 raised will go towards the purchase of new equipment for handicapped persons in aged care homes and institutions in the Republic of Macedonia.

The Lions fielded a squad without FFV 2005 Gold Medal winner Anthony Magnacca, Zaya Younan, Tayfun Devrimol, Les Anastasiou, Goce Gruevski, Steven Manceski and Steven Soleski to take on a reasonably strong Magic squad. With seven senior players not playing, the in-experience of the Lions players was evident as they had limited opportunities in front of goal, and only started to threaten in the last thirty minutes, while the Magic seized their opportunities and scored a goal in each half to hand them the victory.

The second game will be played on Sunday 22nd January at the home of Altona Magic (Paisley Reserve, Altona North). Funds raised from this match will also be donated to Australian Humanitarian Aid for Macedonia (AHAM) / Macedonian Horizons. Kick off is at 6:00pm and entry is $10 for everyone over 16 years of age with children admitted free.

MEANWHILE, the Preston Lions Football Club are looking at signing a striker in the next couple of weeks from the Republic of Macedonia who plays for a club in the Macedonian First Division (Makedonska Prva Liga). If the striker signs for the club, he should be ready for the Lions first Victorian Premier League match in 2006 against the Melbourne Knights at B.T. Connor Reserve.
