Lions
and Magic join forces to help raise funds for humanitarian
appeal in Macedonia
PLFC MEDIA RELEASE
Sunday
08 January 2006
The Preston Lions Football Club will play two goodwill
matches against fellow Premier League club Altona Magic in
January to help raise funds for a Macedonian charity.
The income
raised from the sale of entry tickets at both games will
be donated to Australian Humanitarian Aid for Macedonia (AHAM)
/ Macedonian Horizons to go towards the purchase of new
equipment for handicapped persons in aged care homes and
institutions in the Republic of Macedonia.
Preston
will host the first match on Sunday the 15th of January at
its home ground (B.T. Connor Reserve, Reservoir) whilst
the second game will be played the following Sunday on the
22nd of January at the home of Altona Magic (Paisley
Reserve, Altona North). Both games kick off at 6:00pm and
entry is $10 for everyone over 16 years of age with
children admitted free.
With both
clubs strongly supported by Victoria's large Macedonian
community, sizeable crowds are expected to turn out and
show their support as both teams put the finishing touches
on their preparations for the season opening round in
early February.
President
of the Preston Lions, Chris Todorovski, said that the club
did not hesitate to offer its support to the charitable
cause.
"The
Preston Lions Football Club owes its 60-year existence
largely to the Macedonian community who came to this
country so many years ago and built this club into what it
is today. It is important that we honour the
contributions made by the pioneers of this great club and
these charity games offer the perfect opportunity to give
something back to the homeland in a positive and
meaningful way," said Todorovski.
Chairman
of AHAM, Janko Georgievski, agreed and said that both
Preston and Altona are to be commended for their support
of this initiative.
"I would
like to express my sincere thanks to the leadership at
both clubs for their unconditional support and willingness
to participate in this most worthwhile of causes. I
encourage the fans and supporters of both clubs and all
who have Macedonia in their hearts to come along and enjoy
two wonderful games," concluded Georgievski.
Meanwhile,
the Lions next pre-season assignment comes this Friday
(January 13) when they face Fawkner-Whittlesea in Game 1
of the Crazy Johns Summer Cup Knockout Competition.
Consisting of 16 teams, the competition runs for just over
two weeks with the eventual winner receiving $5,000 in
prize money and the runner-up receiving $2,000. This
Friday's game kicks off at 6:30pm at B.T. Connor Reserve.
