PLFC MEDIA RELEASE
Thursday 15 December 2005
The Preston Lions
will face a team of East Timorese-Australian soccer players in
a friendly game as part of their lead up to the 2006 Victorian
Premier League season. To be played on Sunday 8 January
2006, the event is a joint initiative of the Darebin City
Council, the Friends of Baucau and the Preston Lions Football
Club.The match will
close the 2005 Timor Cup tournament and will help buy sports
equipment and raise funds for youth projects in the District
of Baucau in East Timor. Renowned Melbourne band, the
Dili All Stars, will also play on the day to support the
event.
The Timor Cup tournament is
an annual sporting event that brings together East Timorese
soccer teams from all around the country in a friendly and fun
competition. This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the
event in Australia.
The tournament will kick off
on Sunday 27 December and the Grand Final will be played on 6
January 2006. Games will be held at the Preston Lions'
home ground, B.T. Connor Reserve, Broadhurst Avenue, in
Reservoir.
President of the Preston
Lions Football Club, Chris Todorovski, said that the club is
proud to be playing a small part in such a worthwhile cause.
"Whilst Preston is a club that is traditionally backed by
Australia's large Macedonian community, this does not preclude
us from lending a helping hand to other communities in any way
that we can. We look forward to welcoming the East
Timorese community to BT Connor Reserve in a fun and social
environment and we hope that the Preston Lions fans will come
out in full force to support this initiative on January the
8th," Todorovski concluded.
